At 8:30 PM the household falls quiet and the sealed decree is brought out. Inside, each child's title is confirmed in writing along with the one thing the palace has noticed about them this year, read aloud one at a time. It is the moment the night stops being a game of dress-up and becomes something they remember being told about themselves.

No, and the plan is written so that nobody feels underdressed either way. Costume is offered as an option in the invitation rather than a requirement, and the titles, sashes and crowns are all part of the experience, so a child who arrives in ordinary clothes is dressed within ten minutes of walking in. If you would rather no costumes at all, tell us and we write it that way.
