At 8:30 PM, the memory book is read aloud.

At 8:30 PM the group opens the sealed Mystery Envelope and starts the memory book. Every child writes and decorates their own page in their own handwriting, and before lights-out the finished book is read aloud to the room, page by page.

The feeling at the heart of this one is the friendship itself being noticed out loud. Children rarely get told, specifically and in front of everyone, what people like about them — this night is built to make that happen without anybody cringing.

It works just as well, and the plan adjusts rather than pretending otherwise. Tell us at the questionnaire stage how long the children have known each other and the card order changes: a group who met last term start with more shared challenges and lighter prompts, spend longer in rotating pairs and reach the meaningful cards late in the evening if at all. A group who have been friends for years start further along, because the light prompts bore them. For a mixed group — three old friends and two new ones — the plan leads with cooperative challenges rather than conversation, since nothing builds a friendship faster than solving something together, and the prompts about shared history are replaced with prompts about right now.

By designing the moment out rather than reacting to it. Children are never asked to pick partners, pick teams, or name a favourite person — every pairing and grouping is set by the plan and rotates so that each child works with every other child during the evening. Nothing ranks friendships or sorts the group into closer and less close, and the awards celebrate the whole group with one for every child, each naming something specific and true. Then, for the moment it still happens, the host guidance is explicit: which pairings to reshuffle to, which two roles to hand over straight away, and a quiet one-line check-in that works far better than asking a child whether they are all right in front of everyone. Not in the 5–7 edition, because that edition is not built on talking about feelings at all — it is built on making things. Drawing each other, a shared craft, a handprint keepsake, and kind words that an adult reads aloud so no child has to speak in front of the group or read something they wrote. The pass rule applies from five upwards, the rounds are short with clear endings, and nothing is ever asked twice. Yes, and it is planned for from the start rather than patched on the night. Every paired activity in the plan comes with a named three-person version, written so the three is a different shape of activity rather than a pair with someone watching. The rotation is built so the same child is never in the three twice in a row, and the host card tells you who to place where at each turn. Three, five, seven or nine guests all run cleanly, and if your numbers change the week before — which they always do — the rotation sheet covers group sizes across the whole range so you are not redesigning anything the night before.
